West Bloomfield Township — A firefighter is recovering from smoke inhalation suffered while battling a blaze at a home early Thursday morning.

According to authorities, the fire was reported at about 1:30 a.m. in the 3800 block of Pinnock.

“The homeowner said he was awakened by smoke,” West Bloomfield Township Fire Marshal Pat Reiny said. “He got another person, a woman, out of the house and then went back in to fight it with a garden hose. By that time, the fire was too big and he called 911.”

The firefighter who was injured was outside the home when he was engulfed by a large volume of smoke.

“He was spraying the home and took in a big lungful,” Reiny said. “It was a small home and it took a significant amount of damage. There were smoke detectors in the home but they didn’t activate.”

The firefighter was taken by EMS to Henry Ford Hospital for treatment but was then transferred to Detroit Receiving Hospital where he was treated and released.

No one else was injured in the fire, which remains under investigation.
