Farmington Hills — A suspicious bottle found in the driveway of a home led to police calling in the Michigan State Police bomb squad Sunday night.

According to the Farmington Hills Police Department, the clear plastic bottle was discovered at about 8 p.m. by a home owner on Fernhill Road, located in an area north of 13 Mile and between Orchard Lake and Farmington roads.

Police said the bottle looked like it shiny pieces of metal foil in it.

“The lady homeowner found it and moved it from the driveway to the curb because she didn’t want to run over it,” said Commander Mike Ciaramitaro.“Then she opened the cap to relieve the pressure. Then she decided ,‘Oh oh, maybe I shouldn’t do that,’ and then called us. We decided someone should take a look at it and called in the bomb squad.”

The bomb squad arrived at about 9:30 p.m.

“They ended up shooting it with a pellet gun to relieve the pressure, which rendered it harmless,” Ciaramitaro said. “And that was it. We haven’t yet determined what was in the bottle.”

According to police, the family hasn’t had any problems in the neighborhood and don’t think it was directed at them.

“We had a similar incident on June 29 in the same subdivision,” Ciarmitaro said. “We’re just wondering if it’s kids messing around with pressurized plastic bottles.”

The bomb squad cleared the area by 11:30 p.m.
