Eastpointe — Police have two men in custody after they allegedly assaulted a man at a family gathering for a person who had died earlier that day.

At about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, police arrived at a home in the 2300 block of Schroeder, near Norton, after receiving reports of a man being shot in the head.

Upon arrival, police found a 52-year-old Detroit man bleeding from a head wound that police determined came not from a gunshot but from an assault.

The man was treated at a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Police identified two men, a 49-year-old Detroiter and a 34-year-old Warren resident, as persons of interest in the incident. Both men were located a short time later and are currently in custody.

Friends and family had gathered at the home after the death earlier in the day of an elderly family member.

It appears the altercation was unrelated to the family member’s death, although the cause of the fight remains unclear, police said. The incident remains under investigation.
