Third-period flurry lifts UM to victory at MSG

No. 6 Michigan erupted for four goals in the third period to defeat No. 15 Penn State, 6-3, in the hockey half of a sports doubleheader on Super Saturday before 13,479 at Madison Square Garden.

Michigan downed Penn State 79-72 in men's basketball earlier in the day at MSG .

Cristoval Nieves’ goal at 2:19 of third tied the game before Justin Selman notched the game-winner eight minutes later. Tyler Mott scored twice, including an empty netter, for Michigan (16-3-4, 7-1-2-1 Big Ten).

Penn State (16-7-3, 6-4) led 3-2 after two periods as David Goodwin, Andrew Sturtz (power play) and Ricky DeRosa scored.

Alex Kile and JT Compher (short-handed) opened the scoring for the Wolverines.

Steve Racine made 33 saves for UM, which plays Michigan State at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Joe Louis Arena.
