Tigers sign Cuban infielder Leonardo Laffita
Detroit — The Tigers have taken a flyer on 24-year-old Cuban-born infielder Leonardo Laffita.
General manager Al Avila confirmed the Tigers have signed him. According to Baseball America, who first reported the story, the Tigers paid $250,000 for him.
Laffita, 6-1, 200 pounds with above-average speed, played last season in the Mexican League, hitting .280 in 23 games.
Although he played shortstop last season, he projects better as a second baseman or in the outfield. He made eight errors last season.
The Tigers also signed right-handed pitcher and former Diamondbacks prospect Willy Paredes to a minor league contract. Paredes, who turned 27 Tuesday, was 15-11 with a 3.70 ERA and a 1.401 WHIP in five minor league seasons.
