Sunday’s roundup: Michigan State women hold off Iowa

Iowa City, Iowa — Aerial Powers scored 25 points and had a key steal and two free throws in the closing seconds, Tori Jankoska hit four free throws in the final 23 seconds and No. 17 Michigan State held off Iowa, 74-69, on Sunday.

Megan Gustafson made 1 of 2 free throws with 34 seconds left to pull Iowa within 68-67. Jankoska then made two free throws with 23.7 seconds to play and Powers followed with a steal and two free throws at 15.4 seconds. Ally Disterhoft made a layup to get Iowa within three but Jankoska iced it with two at the stripe with five seconds left.

Jankoska scored 11, Branndais Agee 15 and Jasmine Hines 11 with 10 rebounds for the Spartans (18-5, 9-3 Big Ten), who won the first meeting 80-73.

Disterhoft had 17 points for the Hawkeyes (15-9, 5-7) and Chase Coley and Tania Davis had 12 each.

(At) Michigan 96, Illinois 83: Sophomore Katelynn Flannery set a career high with 36 points and surpassed the 1,000-point mark for the Wolverines. Flannery, who hit 6-of-10 3-pointers, has 1,020 career points.

Hallie Thorne had 25 and Siera Thompson 11 for the Wolverines (13-10, 5-7 Big Ten).

Minnesota 112, (at) Northwestern 106 (2 OT): Rachel Banham tied a NCAA record with 60 points — 10 coming in the first overtime and eight in the second — to lead Minnesota.

In matching the 60 points put up by Cindy Brown of Long Beach State against San Jose State on Feb. 16, 1987, the 5-foot-9 guard made 19 of 32 shots, including 8 of 15 from 3-point range, and hit 14 of 16 free throws. She also had eight rebounds, four assists and two steals for the Golden Gophers (16-7, 8-4 Big Ten).

Along the way, the senior from Lakeville, Minnesota, shattered the school (44) and Big Ten records (49).

Maggie Lyon had 31 points and 12 rebounds and was the only starter who didn’t foul out for the Wildcats (14-10, 3-9).

Big Ten men

No. 5 Iowa 77, (at) Illinois 65: Peter Jok scored 23 and Jarrod Uthoff had 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead Iowa.

Jok took over early in the second half, scoring seven of the first 10 points for Hawkeyes (19-4, 10-1 Big Ten), who would push the lead to as many as 20 points midway through the half.

Adam Woodbury added a double-double for the Hawkeyes with 10 points and 14 rebounds.

Iowa outrebounded the Illini, 43-32. Illinois (11-13, 3-8) has been outrebounded in 10 of its 11 conference games.

Top 25 men

No. 12 SMU 92, (at) South Florida 58: Shake Milton scored 22 and Nic Moore 17 for SMU (20-2, 9-2 American Athletic Conference), which matched its season high with 14 3-pointers and shot 60 percent overall.

No. 17 Miami 75, (at) Georgia Tech 68: Sheldon McClellan scored 22 and Ja’Quan Newton hit a huge 3-pointer to lead Miami (18-4, 7-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) to its fifth win in six games.

(At) No. 16 Oregon 76, Utah 66: Dillon Brooks had 30 points and nine assists, both career highs, to lead Oregon (20-4, 9-2 Pac-12), which won its sixth consecutive game and 22nd straight at home, one shy of the school record.
