Report: Lions hire Broncos' Callahan as QB coach
The Lions have been looking for a quarterbacks coach since promoting Jim Bob Cooter to offensive coordinator during the season, and they’ve reportedly found someone who has experience working with Cooter.
Brian Callahan, who spent the last six years with the Denver Broncos, will be the Lions’ next quarterbacks coach, according to FOX Sports. He spent 2015 as an offensive assistant with an emphasis on quarterbacks for the Super Bowl 50 champions.
The Lions have yet to announce the hire.
The son of former Raiders and Nebraska coach Bill Callahan, Brian Callahan worked with Cooter when they were both offensive assistants in 2013, when the Broncos also advanced to the Super Bowl before losing to the Seahawks.
As he did for the final nine games of 2015, Cooter will likely continue to work with Lions quarterbacks, including Matthew Stafford, but now he’ll have more time to focus on the entire offense with Callahan around.
Before joining the Broncos as a coaching assistant in 2010, Callahan spent 2008-09 at Junipero Serra High in California, one as quarterbacks coach and one as offensive coordinator, and was a graduate assistant at UCLA from 2006-07.
