Repairs underway at MSU’s Munn arena after leak

Repairs are underway following a chemical leak that caused the evacuation of Munn Ice Arena at Michigan State University on Thursday afternoon.

An ammonia release was detected about 1:10 p.m. inside the facility. Around a half-dozen people were evacuated, university spokesman Jason Cody said. There were no reported injuries.

“The leak was traced to a valve on an indicator gauge, and repairs are underway,” school officials wrote in a notice Thursday. “Ammonia is used in the arena to make and cool the ice.”

The leak was contained and there was no threat to the campus community, school officials said.

The arena remained closed Thursday afternoon.

School officials said a monitoring system set off a warning alarm, turned on exhaust fans and notified authorities.

Chestnut Road reopened in front of the arena at 1 Chestnut Road in East Lansing.
