Fifth-rounder Joe Dahl is Lions’ third OL pick

Allen Park — General manager Bob Quinn bucked his early draft trend Saturday by taking a safety in the fourth round, but in the fifth round, the Lions reverted to what they did the first two days.

With the 151st overall pick in the fifth round, the Lions draft offensive lineman Joe Dahl from Washington State. He’s the third offensive linemen the Lions have taken in Quinn’s first draft — tackle Taylor Decker went in the first round, center Graham Glasgow in the third — and four of the first five picks have been trench players, with defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson going in the second.

Dahl started at left tackle the last two seasons for the Cougars, but he played left guard in 2013, providing the versatility the Lions covet up front. At 6-foot-4, 304 pounds, Dahl seems destined to play inside in the NFL. But with the Lions having a more pressing long-term need at tackle — this is the final year of Riley Reiff’s contract — he could have a shot to play multiple spots.

Washington State led the FBS in passing attempts each of the three seasons Dahl was a starter, so the Lions must be impressed with his ability to pass protect, though aware of his limited experience as a run blocker.

Dahl attended the Senior Bowl, an event in which he solidified his draft stock. The Lions have now drafted three Senior Bowl participants, including Glasgow and fourth-round safety Miles Killebrew.
