Wings’ Glendening out of world championships with injury

Detroit – Forward Luke Glendening of the Red Wings isn’t going to play for Team USA in the world championships beginning this weekend.

Glendening is returning home, after it was determined that an injury he suffered late in the regular season will keep him out of the tournament.

General manager Ken Holland said at Red Wings’ locker cleanout day last week Glendening had been dealing with a foot injury.

Glendening (East Kentwood / University of Michigan) joined Team USA on its flight to Europe – this would have been Glendening’s first chance to compete in the world championships – but was scratched from Monday’s exhibition against Finland, in Helsinki, because of the injury.

Despite dealing with the foot issue, Glendening only missed one game during the regular season, playing 81 games and producing 21 points (eight goals). He played in all five playoff games.

The Red Wings have six players competing in the tournament, which begins Friday in Russia – Pavel Datsyuk and Alexey Marchenko (Russia), Dylan Larkin (USA), Gustav Nyquist (Sweden), Tomas Jurco (Slovakia) and Teemu Pulkkinen (Finland).
