Tigers’ Justin Verlander, model Kate Upton engaged
Break out the congrats: Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander and supermodel girlfriend Kate Upton are engaged.
The pair’s nuptials were confirmed when Upton showed off a ring Monday at the 2016 Met Gala in New York, E! News reported. They were among the luminaries of film, music, sports and fashion at the hugely star-studded charity gala run by influential Vogue editor Anna Wintour, which brings in millions for the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
“I’m really excited. He asked me right before season started, so we’ve been keeping it on the down low for quite a while,” Upton was quoted as telling the media outlet. “So I’m excited to finally be able to share it with the world!”
News of the celebrity couple’s wedding bells immediately sparked well-wishing online Tuesday night.
“Congratulations to them!” one user wrote on Twitter.
Some fans were apparently heartbroken. “why Justin? Why?” one person tweeted.
Upton and Verlander’s bond has been in the spotlight for other reasons recently. During the final week of Tigers spring camp, they sponsored an event at Marchant Stadium in Florida promoting dog adoption and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, The Detroit News reported.
They’ve attended public events together, including in Metro Detroit, between duties in their respective careers.
Verlander, who turned 33 in February, is now the longest tenured Tiger — the last man standing from the 2006 World Series team. The former Cy Young Award trophy-holder has been called its most celebrated right-handed pitcher.
Upton, 23, a St. Joseph, Michigan native, has graced the covers of Vogue and the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. She has also transitioned into acting, most recently appearing in the 2014 film “The Other Woman” and having finished three other productions, according to IMDb.com.
