Detroit — One man died and a woman was injured while driving with two children Thursday night after a shooting near the city’s Boston-Edison neighborhood.

The van where two victims were shot near Rosa Parks and Glynn Court in Detroit May 5, 2016. The woman was transported to the hospital and the man died in the attack.

The pair had been headed north in a conversion van on Rosa Parks near Boston about 7 p.m. when an occupant in a black Chevrolet Impala with silver trim opened fire, said Detroit police Capt. Elaine Miles.

The van, which had two children inside, crashed onto the side of the one-way street, she said.

The 27-year-old man driving was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The condition of the woman, 19, was not available, Miles said. The children, both under age 7, were not injured. Their relationship was unclear.

“It’s a tragedy,” she told reporters near the scene. “We’re suffering too many tragedies in our city.”

Investigators did not have a description of the suspect, and it was unclear if anyone else was inside the Impala, Miles said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Detroit Police Department at (313) 596-2200.

Officers remained on the scene for hours, blocking traffic with their squad cars and yellow police tape. Flashing red and blue lights illuminated the intersection at dusk.

Residents who live near the mostly tree-lined street with multistory homes and well-kept yards were startled.

“Usually nothing ever happens here — not like this,” said one woman near the scene.
