No. 7 MSU upsets No. 2 Nebraska at Big Ten tournament

Jordan Zimmerman’s RBI double highlighted a five-run sixth that propelled No. 7 Michigan State to a 5-1 victory over No. 2 Nebraska Wednesday at the Big Ten tournament in Omaha, Neb.

MSU (35-18) advances to play No. 6 Maryland (29-25) at 6 p.m. Thursday (BTN).

Kory Simonton singled in a run and Matt Byars' sacrifice fly brought in another during the uprising, which supplied the Spartans all the offense needed behind the three-hit pitching of Cam Vieaux.

Justin Hovis doubled down the left-field line to open the inning and later scored on an error. Kory Young got on with bunt single and came home on Zimmerman’s double.

Dan Durkin reached on an error by Nebraska second baseman Jake Schleppenbach, which scored Brandon Hughes who got on with a walk.

Zimmerman came home on Simonton’s single and Durkin scored on Byars’ sac fly.

Ben Miller doubled, scoring Jake Placzek, in the bottom of the sixth for Nebraska’s lone run.

Vieaux gave up one earned run while striking out one and walking three in 8⅔ innings. Dakota Mekkes struck out  Nebraska's Angelo Altavilla to end the game.

Maryland 5, Indiana 3: Mike Shawaryn struck out 16 in his third complete game this season for the Terrapins (29-25).

Shawaryn (6-4) allowed four hits while throwing 125 pitches, 90 for strikes, in a performance that left him one short of the tournament strikeout record. He retired the last 12 batters he faced.

Iowa 8, Minnesota 2: C.J. Eldred pitched seven innings and allowed two runs on six hits, and Tyler Peyton had four hits for Minnesota (28-25).
