Wings trade for Sharks prospect Sadowy

Detroit — The Red Wings made a trade with an eye toward the future Thursday when they acquired prospect Dylan Sadowy from San Jose for a 2017 third-round draft pick.

Sadowy was selected in the third round (81st overall) by San Jose in 2014 but the Sharks have been unable to sign him.

A 6-foot-1, 195-pound left wing, Sadowy scored 45 goals and had 25 assists (70 points) in 64 games with Saginaw and Barrie in the Ontario League this past season.

In eight playoff games, Sadowy had two goals and three assists (five points).

“We like his grit and competitiveness, coupled with a good skill set,” said Red Wings assistant general manager Ryan Martin. “He’s a guy who has had two 40-goal seasons in the OHL, so clearly he’s got an offensive skill set.

“But what really stands out is his competitiveness and grit and willingness to block shots and do the little things.”

Over 258 junior games, mainly with Saginaw (Sadowy was traded to Barrie midway through the season), Sadowy scored 116 goals in 258 games.

“He scores a lot of goals from the hard areas,” Martin said. “He’s a guy whose game could translate well to the NHL level because of all the little things he does.”

Sadowy was a player the Red Wings thought about drafting in June 2014, after watching him often in Saginaw.

“We liked him in his draft year and our area guys (scouts) definitely liked him,” Martin said. “But the at the end of the day, there are only so many guys you can pick.”
