Greek, Polish festivals mark unofficial start of summer

The Detroit News

The parishioners at St. George Greek Orthodox Church said “ya’ssoo” to the start of the summer festival season this weekend.

The 2016 Ya’ssoo Greek Festival brought dining and dancing to Bloomfield Hills. The festival takes its name from the Greek word for a toast to health. Sunday’s festivities included classes on how to make spinach pie, folk dancing and even a loukoumades-eating contest (think tiny, honey-covered doughnuts).

Over in Orchard Lake, St. Mary’s Preparatory School embraced its Polish heritage at the 45th annual Polish Country Fair. The festival included carnival rides, a Vegas tent and Polish staples like kielbasa and pierogies.
