Ex-Bronco Caldwell wants another Super Bowl ring

For Andre Caldwell, the decision was easy.

Obviously, even though he’s with the Lions now, he wanted to go to the White House last week with his former team, the Denver Broncos, and celebrate last year’s Super Bowl title.

“I feel like a lot of those guys, those are my brothers,” he said after minicamp on Wednesday. “I worked with them. For the past four years, we grinded and went to war together, and I feel it’s only right for me to reap some of the rewards after all that hard work and spend that moment with my brothers.”

The 31-year-old Caldwell had a minimal role for the Broncos the past four years, serving as a part-time kickoff returner and peaking at 16 receptions in 2013. Showing the importance of every man on an NFL roster, though, Caldwell had a 22-yard catch on Denver’s opening Super Bowl drive that put the Broncos in field goal range.

In Detroit, Caldwell is again battling for a back-end roster spot, and even though he’s been impressive thus far in the offseason program, he’s still among a handful of players hoping to be the Lions’ No. 5 receiver.

“Competition brings out the best in players, and I think that’s the atmosphere they’re bringing around here,” he said of his current situation.

The here and now took a backseat for Caldwell last week, though, as he reunited with his teammates in Washington where he actually shook hands and spoke with President Barack Obama, though he declined to detail the conversation.

Not all of the Broncos partook in the experience, though, as quarterback Brock Osweiler, now with Houston, abstained from the event last Monday, which was shocking to Caldwell.

“It was a blessing to be there and be able to experience that,” he said.

Caldwell also went to Denver for the ring ceremony at Sports Authority Field on Sunday where he received the 5.05-carat, 194-diamond behemoth. Caldwell doesn’t plan to wear it much, though.

“I want to earn another one,” he said. “I ain’t going to wear it around here. It’s huge, though!”

Caldwell won’t be bragging about his new bling, but he said he has been sharing his Super Bowl experience with his new teammates.

“Me sharing my experience makes them want to go get it,” he said. “It’s one of the greatest accomplishments in the NFL, and hopefully I’ll get a chance to do it again with a team like this.”
