Red Wings’ training camp opens Sept. 23

Training camp for the Red Wings will begin a little later this season.

Because of the World Cup tournament that’ll take place in September, NHL training camps – including the Red Wings’ – will start about a week later than usual.

The Red Wings will train at Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City from Sept. 23-26.

The alumni and celebrity game will be Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. and the annual Red and White scrimmage is scheduled for Sept. 26 at noon.

A complete training camp schedule and roster will be released later.

The Wings’ preseason opener is Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. against the Penguins at Joe Louis Arena.

The World Cup will run from Sept. 17 to Oct. 1 in Toronto.

Dylan Larkin and Justin Abdelkader (USA), Henrik Zetterberg and Niklas Kronwall (Sweden), Petr Mrazek (Czech Republic), Alexey Marchenko (Russia) and Tomas Tatar (Europe) will play in the World Cup and will not be available for training camp.

Right before training camp, the 18th annual NHL prospects tournament takes place Sept. 16-20 at Centre Ice Arena. The Red Wings, Carolina, Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Minnesota, New York Rangers and St. Louis will have teams of prospects in the tournament.

Also, the Red Wings announced their development camp will be July 6-10 at Centre Ice Arena.
