Score of Friday Tigers game changed to 7-5

Detroit – In the grand scheme of things, it’s irrelevant. The Tigers were still beaten by the Indians Friday night, their seventh straight loss to their division rivals.

But the final score has been changed. The Tigers were credited with another run in the ninth inning, making the official final score 7-5, not 7-4.

Umpire crew chief Fieldin Culbreth alerted the league to a scoring oversight on the final play of the game and it was researched and confirmed by the Elias Sports Bureau. The Tigers had already scored a run to make it 7-4 with one out. Miguel Cabrera was batting with Ian Kinsler on second and Cameron Maybin on first.

Cabrera hit a line drive into the gap in right center field. Rajai Davis ran the ball down, bobbled it and caught it before he hit the wall. The runners, thinking the ball had dropped, took off and never stopped running.

The Indians ultimately threw the ball in and completed the game-ending double play at first base. The catch was reviewed and upheld and the players left the field.

Elias alerted both teams and Major League Baseball Saturday morning that because the Indians never appealed Kinsler failure to tag up on the fly out, and he clearly crossed the plate before the force out was made on Maybin at first base, the run counted.

Cabrera gets a sacrifice fly and an RBI and Kinsler is credited with a run scored. But there is no additional blemish against Indians closer Cody Allen because both runs were unearned.
