Ex-Wings Chelios, Hull analysts for World Cup of Hockey
A pair of familiar faces will appear on TV when the 2016 World Cup of Hockey gets underway on Sept. 17.
Former Red Wings and Hall of Famers Chris Chelios and Brett Hull will join ESPN and work in the studio during the tournament as analysts. They will work with hosts Adnan Virk, John Buccigross and John Saunders, who played hockey at Western Michigan.
Chelios spent 10 seasons in Detroit, winning two Stanley Cup titles with the Wings (2002, 2008) and recording 180 points (24 goals, 156 assists) in 681 games, including playoffs. He’s currently a non-bench assistant on Wings coach Jeff Blashill’s staff.
Hull played with the Wings for three of his 19 NHL seasons and was a member of Detroit’s 2002 Stanley Cup team. He had 231 points (105 goals, 126 assists) in 284 career games with the Wings and is currently an executive vice president for the St. Louis Blues.
Chelios and Hull were also part of the U.S. team that took home the gold medal in the 1996 World Cup of Hockey.
NHL studio analyst Barry Melrose and “SportsCenter” anchor Steve Levy will call all of Team USA’s games as well as the semifinals and finals on ESPN. The tournament will be played at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre and will feature a minimum of 16 games, all of which will be televised.
