De La Salle principal, athletic director leave

De La Salle Collegiate High School’s principal and athletic director have left their positions, school President John Knight said in a Wednesday letter addressed to alumni and benefactors.

The departures of Patrick Adams, the former principal, and Brian Kelly, the former athletic director and assistant principal, offer “an important opportunity to reset our commitment to our Lasallian tradition,” Knight wrote.

The private all-boys Roman Catholic high school in Warren has around 800 students and 13 sports teams.

Knight wrote that the school’s assistant principal, Steve Stewart, will act as the interim principal for the 2016-2017 academic year. He did not indicate if the school will initiate a search for a new principal.

“(Stewart) has served our school community for 12 years,” Knight wrote. “I am very grateful to Steve for his willingness to serve in the role of interim principal.”

Knight did not name a replacement for the athletic director.

A representative for the school was not immediately available for comment Wednesday night.

Knight wrote the school is committed to “continuing our tradition.”

“De La Salle will continue to foster an environment that promotes the academic, spiritual, physical and emotional growth of each student,” he wrote.

De La Salle opened in Detroit in 1926 near the Coleman A. Young International Airport. The school moved to Warren in 1982.
