A 29-year veteran of the Detroit Police Department died while on duty Wednesday, officials said.

Sgt. Kevin Miller was assigned to the 11th Precinct and had worked in several units, demonstrating “exemplary service,” department officials said in a statement.

“Certainly, this is an unforeseen tragedy and our hearts are grieved,” according to a Police Department statement. “The Detroit Police Department extends our deepest sympathy to his family and ask that you would keep us all in your prayers.”

Details, including a cause of death, were not released Wednesday night. However, Miller was not injured or slain on the job, Officer Shanelle Williams said.

Information on funeral arrangements was not yet available.

As news of Miller’s death spread, supporters offered condolences on the Detroit police Facebook page.

“... Thank you, Sir and to your family for all your sacrifices for me and my family!!! I salute you,” one user wrote. “You were appreciated and your life mattered!”

Another posted: “End of watch Sargent Kevin Miller, time to go to your heavenly home. Thank you for your years of service.”
