Alleged victim Spartans DB Edmondson will transfer

Forty-eight hours after an incident where he was an alleged victim of an assault involving former Michigan State basketball forward Draymond Green, MSU football player Jermaine Edmondson has asked for and has been granted a transfer from the team, according to a statement from the university.

The fifth-year senior defensive back will play his final year at another school. Edmondson, from Canton, Ohio, appeared in 38 games at MSU. Last year he had 24 tackles (2.5 for loss) and three passes defensed.

“In discussions with Jermaine Edmondson following spring practice and in the weeks thereafter, it became clear that Jermaine wanted to play a larger role on the team," MSU football coach Mark Dantonio said in a statement. "After consulting with him in the summer, he felt it was in his best interest to finish his playing career elsewhere.

"We have granted his immediate release to transfer to another institution to have that opportunity.”

Dantonio also announced safety Mark Meyers will transfer to Miami (Ohio) for his final season of eligibility.

Meyers, a Toledo native, recorded 17 tackles in 27 career games for the Spartans and graduated in 2016 with a degree in advertising.

Meyers was suspended six games last season after an arrest in East Lansing for operating while intoxicated. The incident occurred Sept. 6, two days after Michigan State’s season-opening victory at Western Michigan. Meyers later pleaded guilty to impaired driving and returned to the field for Michigan State’s 52-26 victory over Indiana on Oct. 24.
