Pistons sign top pick Henry Ellenson to four-year deal

The Pistons surprisingly got their versatile big man last month in the first round of the NBA draft.

And now they have him signed to a rookie contract.

The team announced Tuesday they have signed Henry Ellenson to a contract, completing their draft class, as second-round pick Michael Gbinije already signed last week. 

Ellenson’s deal is likely worth around $8 million over four years, fitting with the rookie pay scale. According to basketballInsiders.com, the escalating numbers would be $1.7 million next season, $1.78 million for 2017-18, $1.86 million for the third year and $2.86 million in the final season.

The Pistons selected Ellenson 18th overall, filling one of their biggest bench needs with a 6-foot-11 perimeter threat. Ellenson entered the draft after his freshman season at Marquette, where he averaged 17 points and 9.7 rebounds and was selected to the All-Big East first team.

At the Orlando Summer League this month, Ellenson started all five games and posted 12.4 points and 7.4 rebounds. He showed good 3-point range and an ability to create his own shot off the dribble outside the paint.

Ellenson is projected to be a reserve, behind starter Tobias Harris and Jon Leuer, who was signed during free agency.
