Roseville mothers, kids hit by car; child hospitalized

A 11-month-old boy was hospitalized Tuesday after he was run over by a reckless driver in an incident that also injured the child’s mother, another woman and her child, according to Roseville police.

The four were struck while walking around 7:30 p.m. along 12 Mile near Pinehurst, west of Gratiot, Roseville Police Chief James Berlin said. The mothers were knocked to the ground while their children, boys ages 3 and 11 months, were thrown from their strollers and landed in an grassy area beside the roadway.

The incident happened moments after the 22-year-old Roseville driver was seen speeding southbound along Pinehurst, “stopping, squealing his tires (and) intentionally drawing attention to himself,” police said in a statement. He came to a stop at the intersection and gunned his engine repeatedly, “acting highly irresponsible” while waiting to turn onto westbound 12 Mile.

Then the traffic cleared, police said.

“He accelerated at a high rate of speed and actually did a doughnut out in 12 Mile before going up over the curb,” Berlin said. “(He) lost control of his vehicle, drove up over the sidewalk and struck all four.”

The victims, who are Roseville residents, were taken to a local hospital, Berlin said. The two mothers and the 3-year-old were treated and released.

“The 11-month-old was admitted for facial abrasions,” Berlin said. The boy is expected to recover.

The man was uninjured and arrested on reckless driving charges, Berlin said. He was booked, processed and released on a $500 cash bond.

Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be factors, Berlin said.

“There’s not much to say. You can’t police stupidity and obviously that’s what this driver was. You can quote me on that,” Berlin said. “He was showing off, squealing his tires and all that. A couple feet either way and this could have been much more tragic that it already is.”
