Analyst: UM fans shouldn’t panic over decommitments

The Michigan recruiting commitments keep falling, and that’s raising some eyebrows.

Three players opted to decommit from Michigan in the last two days, including Georgia’s Aubrey Solomon, one of the top defensive tackles in the nation in the 2017 recruiting class.

Solomon and defensive end / tight end Leonard Taylor, a 2018 commit from Springfield, Ohio, made their announcements on Monday.

Georgia offensive lineman Jalil Irvin hopped on the decommit bandwagon on Tuesday. Like Solomon, Irvin said he still intends to visit Michigan.

Solomon’s decision created a flap because he revealed Michigan sent him a thank-you note for attending the BBQ at the Big House, which he did not attend. He also indicated his names were spelled incorrectly.

Allen Trieu, Midwest football recruiting manager for Scout.com, said there should not be widespread concern among Michigan fans.

“I don’t think there’s any reason to panic,” Trieu said. “Whenever something doesn’t go right or there’s a decommitment, you have to reassess: ‘Is there anything we could have done?’ Part of that is figuring out how accurate the story is. Not accuracy in terms of the facts, I definitely think it happened, but, ‘Would he have decommitted anyway and how do we work on that?’”

He said having a player from the 2018 class decommit is not shocking because of the time factor. And because three players in just two days made the decision to drop their commitments, that draws attention.

“It’s a little jarring it happened at once, but it all seems unrelated,” Trieu said.

Trieu said notes sent to recruits like the one Solomon received are not produced by the coaches.

“It’s office assistants and (graduate assistants) and people who are just there to help,” he said. “I think kids, if they’re basing their decision of a commitment or non-commitment around that, I can’t say that’s good.”
