Twelve Oaks robbery suspect arraigned, another arrested

A 26-year-old man suspected in a jewelry store robbery at Twelve Oaks Mall last weekend was arraigned Wednesday. Meanwhile, police have arrested a second suspect and are looking for two more.

Jamal Ritter is charged with larceny from a person, first-degree retail fraud and malicious destruction of a building, according to court officials. He appeared before Magistrate Victor Zanolli in 52nd District Court.

Ritter is one of three men accused of breaking a jewelry case with a hammer at Tapper’s and snatching two expensive watches. The incident set off a call of an active shooter on Twitter and led to evacuation of Twelve Oaks Mall.

Earlier Wednesday, a second suspect, a 26-year-old from Detroit, was arrested with help from the Michigan Department of Corrections. He is expected to be arraigned on charges Thursday.

Police continue to look for a third suspect who entered the jewelry store as well as a fourth who served as the driver of a getaway vehicle.

According to police, Ritter turned himself in to Detroit police on Monday after photographs of him and two other suspects were released to the media.

When Novi officers responded to take custody of Ritter, he allegedly bit an officer and kicked out the windows of a Novi police squad car, police said.

Zanolli set bond for Ritter at $300,000 cash surety, no 10 percent. He returns to court for a probable cause hearing Aug. 31.
