A 5-year-old boy was killed Wednesday afternoon after he was run over by his mother’s vehicle’s in Pontiac, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

The 25-year-old mother was driving around 4:45 p.m. north on Kettering near Newman when she heard her other child call out for her, officials said. The woman began to slow her 2006 Chevrolet Uplander to a stop, but then felt a thump.

“She exited her vehicle and found that she had run over her 5-year-old son,” officials said.

The little boy was rushed by STAR EMS to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac, where he was pronounced dead.

Alcohol and narcotics do not appear to be factors in the crash, officials said. The woman was wearing a seat belt and was uninjured.

The investigation remains ongoing.

The boy’s death came less than one week after a 10-month-old Detroit girl was killed when her mother hit her with a vehicle. Police called that incident “a tragic accident” but said it remained under investigation as well.
