Second suspect arraigned in Twelve Oaks smash-and-grab

A second suspect has been arraigned in connection with a jewelry store robbery at Twelve Oaks that sent panicked customers running for the mall’s exits thinking there was a gunman inside.

Carlos Wilson, 26, of Detroit was arraigned Thursday before 52-1 District Court Judge David Law. He has been charged with three felonies: retail fraud, malicious destruction of property and larceny. If found guilty, Wilson could face up to 20 years in prison.

Wilson was given a $500,000 bond and lodged in the Oakland County Jail. His next court hearing is 9:15 a.m. Sept. 7.

Police say Wilson and two other men used a small hammer to smash a display case at Tapper’s Jewelry at about 5:20 p.m. Aug. 20. They took two watches before running out of the store and mall in Novi. Police say a fourth man was the getaway driver.

Earlier this week, Jamal Ritter, 26, of Detroit was arraigned before Magistrate Victor Zanolli in 52nd District Court. He’s charged with larceny from a person, first-degree retail fraud and malicious destruction of a building.

Ritter turned himself into Detroit Police and when Novi officers tried to take him into custody, he allegedly bit an officer and kicked out the windows of a Novi police squad car, police said.

Ritter was given a $300,000 bond and ordered to return to court for a probable cause hearing Wednesday.
