Detroit Osborn pulled out some late-game heroics to defeat Detroit Delta Prep, 20-10, in their season opener Friday.

Quarterback Mandel Berriman attempted just three passes, but he made them count.

“(Berriman) had a crucial 65-yard touchdown pass to Raymon Gates,” coach Sid Wright said.

That long touchdown toss gave Osborn a lead that Delta Prep couldn’t overcome.

Berriman was 2-for-3 for 96 yards for Osborn (1-0), which was coming off a 2-7 campaign in 2015.

Darrick Jones rushed for 201 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries for Osborn. Anton Brown had 13 tackles, a forced fumble and a recovery for Osborn, and Breontae May had an interception and four pass breakups.

Osborn hosts Detroit Denby next Friday and Delta Prep travels to Zeeland East.

Rockford forfeits

Rockford forfeited its season opener against Saline Friday night because too many players were sick with flu-like symptoms.

Rockford superintendent Mike Shibler said the health of the players was more important than playing the season opener Friday against Saline.

Two dozen players have had flu-like symptoms with vomiting and diarrhea, Rockford superintendent Mike Shibler said.
