No damage found in Monroe Co. after tornado warnings
While funnel clouds were spotted in Monroe County, and the National Weather Service had issued tornado warnings for Monroe and Lenawee counties there is no confirmation that a tornado touched down in southeast Michigan on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.
Initial reports that a touch down had occurred came via law enforcement, according to the NWS’ website. But in the weather service’s independent review of the area and in its communications with local officials, no damage could be observed, said weather service meteorologist Bryan Tilley.
A warning issued earlier in the day said that “flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely.”
The warning was canceled at 2 p.m.
Tilley didn’t doubt that initial reports came from people who had seen “a touch down or something close to that,” but that there had been “very weak circulations.”
Had there been a touch down, meteorologists would’ve surveyed the damage and worked backwards to determine how high wind speeds had gotten. Ninety minutes after the tornado warning expired, there was no damage to survey.
