Spartans defensive lineman Smith will transfer

East Lansing — Michigan State sophomore defensive lineman Enoch Smith Jr. announced on social media Wednesday that he is transferring.

Listed No. 3 on the depth chart at nose tackle for Friday’s season-opener against Furman, Smith said it was time to leave.

“I want to thank Michigan State University for accepting me with open arms on April 20, 2013,” he posted on Instagram and Twitter. “Ever since then I have made it my duty to uphold what it means to be a “Spartan.” I have enjoyed my time spent here, but my time here has come to an end. I want to thank Coach Mark Dantonio, Pat Narduzzi, Dan Roushar, and Ron Burton for recruiting me and offering me a scholarship to attend an amazing institution, such as MSU. Thank you to the fans that have supported me, even before I stepped foot on campus. Spartan Nation has made a tremendous impact on my life and my family’s too. God has a plan for me and I am excited for the future. I am more than confident that the team has what it takes to accomplish their goals of going #B2B (Back 2 Back). Smith redshirted in 2014 and appeared in three games last season, recording his first career tackle against Maryland. The native of Chicago was ranked the No. 20 defensive tackle coming out of Caravan High after winning back to back state championships.

He is the second defensive lineman to transfer in the last week, joining Cassius Peat, who didn’t take part in preseason camp. Smith was hampered by injuries in his time at Michigan State and was caught in a position battle that was quickly being taken over by younger players.
