Spartans want LB Ed Davis to see more action

East Lansing — Michigan State has plenty of depth at linebacker, something clearly evident as Jon Reschke returned to the lineup after missing the opener and leading the team in tackles against Notre Dame while also forcing a fumble and intercepting a pass.

But the Spartans are also trying to get sixth-year player Ed Davis back in the mix after he missed 2015 with a knee injury. He played one play against Notre Dame.

“We just felt like he wasn’t quite there yet,” Dantonio said.

Davis is listed No 2 on the depth chart at SAM linebacker behind junior Chris Frey, while Reschke is No. 1 at STAR linebacker with sophomore Andrew Dowell No. 2.

“I think the more good players you have, the better it is,” Dantonio said.

Another trick play

Dantonio has called his share of trick plays at Michigan State, and more often than not he has some interesting names for the plays — “Little Giants” and “Mousetrap” among them.

The latest was called “Muddle huddle.” That came early in the second quarter against Notre Dame on an extra point.

The kicking unit shifted before the snap, and holder Matt Macksood rolled out and threw to tight end Josiah Price for two points.

Off the bench

Sophomore Vayante Copeland might be Michigan State’s best cover cornerback, but he hasn’t started the first two games —  he entered after only a few plays as sophomore Tyson Smith started.

“Tyson has great athletic ability very quick, great speed,” Dantonio said.
