Police probe shooting of Pontiac high school senior

A high school senior from Pontiac was shot Monday morning and police say the circumstances surrounding the attack were unclear.

Police said they were confident the shooting did not take place while the victim was waiting at a bus stop, according to Oakland County Undersheriff Michael McCabe.

McCabe said the shooting likely took place “several blocks away.”

The 17-year-old at the Pontiac Academy of Excellence remained in stable condition at an area hospital with a back wound.

School officials originally reported he was shot at a neighborhood bus stop.

“The student was taken to a local hospital and is being treated,” Pontiac Academy of Excellence Superintendent James Spruill said in a Facebook post Monday morning. “We are in close communication with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department as they are investigating the incident.”

The victim said he was walking to the area where he takes the bus to school when an unknown black male about 16 years old wearing a dark hoodie shot him for no apparent reason and then ran south on Martin Luther King Boulevard, McCabe said.

When interviewed at the hospital the victim changed his story several times regarding the incident and actual location, he said.

The shooting remains under investigation, McCabe said, stressing the incident appeared to have nothing to do with the school.

“We want to assure all parents and students that safety is our No. 1 priority. The school day will continue as planned and counseling services are available to all students.”
