Macomb man relied on faith, love during cancer fight

Jerry Fleming, a Clinton Township man who owned a computer technical support company, died Thursday after a nine-month battle with cancer. He was 52.

Fleming fought cancer at the same time as his beloved wife Sandra Fleming, who died of ovarian cancer in March at the age of 40. Their dual fight – and enduring love for one another – was chronicled in The Detroit News.

Fleming was the owner of Shores-Tech Computers. He grew up in Chesterfield Township.

The father of three met Sandra, an office manager, over an online dating website in 2010 and they married a year later. And even though they were both fighting cancer, Fleming likened their love and cancer’s impact to a biblical term about “the refiners’ fire burning away the impurities.”

“Cancer does that for those you love,” said Fleming in February. “I only see Sandra as perfect.”

Throughout their medical battles, Fleming relied on his faith and was grateful for what he called “high def” love for Sandra.

“God has given me the ability to see her with what I call high def love,” he said earlier this year in an email. “I wouldn’t trade it for the world.”

Fleming is survived by his three children, Jacob, Justin and Erika. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue in Grosse Pointe Woods. Visitation is until 9 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.
