Red Wings to honor Howe with jersey patch
The Detroit Red Wings will wear a commemorative patch on their jerseys throughout the 2016-17 season to honor the late Gordie Howe. Howe, who wore the No. 9, died in June at the age of 88.
The No. 9 patch will be on the right side of their jerseys – above the winged wheel – on both the red and white uniforms.
"Our team wanted to honor ‘Mr. Hockey,’ due to his incredible impact on the game of hockey, the Red Wings organization and the city of Detroit,” said Tom Wilson, president and CEO of Olympia Entertainment.
The Wings also will play with a red “9” painted in the ice behind both nets at Joe Louis Arena during the season.
A tribute to Howe will take place during the Red Wings’ home opener on Oct. 17 against the Ottawa Senators. Fans at the game will receive a Gordie Howe poster.
