A motorcyclist was seriously injured early Wednesday in a crash involving a stray semi-truck tire on Interstate 94 in Detroit, officials said.

Westbound I-94 briefly was closed Wednesday morning at I-75 in Midtown, according to a Department of Transportation and Michigan State Police. It reopened by 8 a.m.

Preliminary information indicated a “tire came off a semi and struck a motorcycle,” according to a Michigan State Police tweet.

“Anyone that witnessed the motorcycle crash that occurred this morning please contact MSP,” officials said.

A spare tire likely caused the crash, because “there is no indication (the truck driver) knew the tire came off,” state police said.

The driver did not stop at the crash scene, according to state police.
