Psychiatric exam next for man accused of killing kids
Dearborn Heights — Gregory Green, the man charged in the slayings of his two children and two stepchildren, was ordered by a judge Wednesday to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
Green’s defense attorney, Charles Longstreet II, sought the exam. It could delay future proceedings about three to four months to allow time for the mental competency examination. He also will be evaluated for competency to stand trial and competency to waive his Miranda rights.
Faith Harris-Green, Gregory Green’s wife and mother of the children, attended the hearing. She was wheeled into the courtroom Wednesday wearing a black veil with her right foot still bandaged from being shot in the foot, allegedly by Green. The mother was comforted by relatives.
She stared ahead as her husband was brought into court for the brief hearing before Dearborn Heights Judge Mark Plawecki. After the hearing, Faith Harris-Green was ushered into a meeting room at the courthouse to meet with the prosecutor.
The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office announced Harris-Green will not be making any statements or granting interviews.
The Detroit News reported Wednesday morning that Harris-Green’s father, Fred Harris of Southfield, a pastor and civil rights activist, had lobbied a decade ago for Green’s parole, records from the Michigan Department of Corrections show.
In addition to allegedly shooting his wife, Green, 49, is charged in the slayings of his two young daughters, Kaleigh Green, 4; Koi Green, 5; and teenaged stepchildren Kara Allen, 17; and Chadney Allen, 19.
Authorities say Green called 911 at 1:15 a.m. Sept. 21 and waited for police in the driveway of his home on the 4400 block of Hipp in Dearborn Heights. Inside the home, investigators discovered his wife, Harris-Green, 39, in the basement, bound with tape and zip ties.
Prosecutors allege Green tied up and assaulted his wife before forcing her to watch him fatally shoot her two older children. Green killed the couple’s two young daughters with carbon-monoxide poisoning, officials said. He has been been charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count each of assault with intent to do great bodily harm, torture, unlawful imprisonment, felonious assault as a felon in possession and felony firearm.
Green served 16 years for the stabbing murder of his first pregnant wife, Tonya, in 1991. He also pleaded the insanity defense in that case and was ordered for mental examination.
Green was then denied parole four times — twice in 2004 and twice in 2006 — before being granted release in 2008, corrections officials said.
