The “creepy clown” trend took a turn toward the dangerous in metro Detroit on Tuesday night when a man wearing a clown mask, and armed with a gun, robbed a Walgreens in Brownstown Township, police said.

The clown-masked man appeared at the Walgreens on Telegraph at about 9:30 p.m., wearing a black hoodie, and brandishing a handgun, according to photos taken by cameras in the store.

Police say the man demanded that a clerk hand over cash, which amounted to $300 to $400. Money in his possession, the man left. Police believe he fled in a blue Chevy Impala.

Brownstown police are asking that anyone with information on the suspect’s identity and whereabouts call Det. Sgt. Bill Huddleston, at (734) 675-1300, ext. 1134.

An hour after the armed robbery on Telegraph, a BP gas station off the US-23 freeway in Ann Arbor was robbed, in an incident with similar details. A half-hour later, about 11 p.m., a Domino’s on Plymouth Road was also robbed by an armed, clown mask-wearing man.

Ann Arbor and Brownstown police are in touch and trying to see if the incidents are connected, Huddleston said.
