Minor injuries in school bus crash on city’s west side

One student was hospitalized and others checked by emergency personnel after a minivan collided with their school bus Tuesday morning on Detroit’s west side, officials said.

The crash occurred at Braile and Keeler, near Lahser and Fenkell in the city’s Brightmoor neighborhood, said Michael Woody, Detroit Police public information director.

Seventeen students from Murphy Performance Academy were on board, ranging in ages from kindergarten through eighth grade, according to Stephanie Widner, superintendent of the charter school group’s Detroit locations.

Murphy is located at 23901 Fenkell, less than a mile from the crash site. The children were on their way to school when the collision occurred, Widner said.

One student, a seventh-grader, was taken to an area hospital “for minor injuries” while the rest were checked at the scene and transported to school via a new bus. All parents of affected students have been notified, Widner said.

“We are happy that there were no serious injuries,” she said.

Murphy is part of the Performance Academies charter school group, which includes Stewart and Trix schools in Detroit as well as a number of academies in Ohio.
