Lions' Quin draws big fine for penalized hit
Allen Park — Lions safety Glover Quin has been fined by the league for hitting a defenseless receiver against the Los Angeles Rams.
The play occurred in the end zone, late in the second quarter, when Quin lowered his shoulder to deliver a blow to Tavon Austin, only to initiate helmet-to-helmet contact. Quin was flagged for the hit.
Asked if he would have done anything differently, Quin couldn’t think of a way to alter his approach.
“If I’m aiming at that area (pointing to his chest) and he comes down and puts his head into me — I didn’t lunge, I didn’t lead with my head, I ran straight through, I turned (my) shoulder — I don’t know what else I can do in that situation,” Quin said.
Quin declined to share the amount of the fine, but said he would appeal. He estimated it’s the fourth or fifth time he’s been fined for something he’s done of the field and he’s appealed every time, having each penalty reduced, but never fully rescinded.
According to the NFL, Quin will be docked $24,309, which is more than 10 percent of his weekly pay check.
“It will be a tough appeal, but we’ll see,” he said.
