Detroit News predictions: Michigan State vs. Maryland

The Detroit News
Detroit News staff writers believe the Spartans can turn things around against the Terrapins.

Matt Charboneau, Angelique S. Chengelis, John Niyo and Bob Wojnowski predict the outcome of Saturday's Michigan State-Maryland game.

Matt Charboneau: Sometimes a team that’s not playing its best simply just puts it all together. That’s about all the Spartans can look to at this point as nearly every aspect of their game has faltered at some point during this four-game skid. Maryland has put up some impressive numbers, but the Terrapins haven’t exactly faced a tough schedule. The trend might say otherwise, but expect a better defensive outing this time out as Michigan State finds a way to get that elusive victory. Michigan State 28-24

Angelique S. Chengelis: I keep picking the Spartans to win because I believe the Spartans have been capable of winning. They have hit the skids, but will find their way at Maryland in a night game. Michigan State can’t afford another loss, especially the week before Michigan. Michigan State 24-21

Michigan State vs. Maryland preview: Halt the skid

John Niyo: Mark Dantonio says his team is walking a lonely road right now, with no rest stop in sight. But if they’re going to get anywhere this season, this has to be the week they find some traction on the ground. Michigan State 31-28

Bob Wojnowski: The Spartans misery isn’t all about the quarterback, no matter how it appears. The four-game losing streak is about the trenches, and how shocking it is that a Mark Dantonio team has been pushed around. The Spartans still have the tough runners to grind it out, and the Terrapins have returned to reality after a 4-0 start. A night game on the road is never easy, but look for Michigan State to pop a couple turnovers and snap the skid. Michigan State 28-23
