Suspect sought in carjacking of 74-year-old in Detroit

Detroit police are seeking tips to find a woman accused of carjacking a 74-year-old on the city’s east side.

The suspect approached the victim as she was leaving the McDougall Market near East Canfield and Moran at 10:15 a.m. Sunday and asked her for a ride, police said in a statement.

Surveillance footage showed the woman, wearing a dark leather jacket, gray blouse and light capris, exiting the store with the driver and climbing into the passenger seat of a green 1997 Buick Century. The car then is seen pulling off.

But as the driver headed east on Canfield toward Moran, “the suspect ... produced a weapon, pointed (it) in her direction and advised her that she was being robbed,” investigators said Monday.

The driver then fled the vehicle and the suspect sped away, according to the release.

The Buick is a four-door car with the license plate number CHG 1231.

Authorities described the suspect as a 40-year-old African-American, 5 feet 8 inches tall, 225 pounds, with a dark complexion, large build and short curly brown hair.
