Waterford Township — A driver suspected in a fatal hit-and-run is in custody and expected to face charges, police said Thursday.

The death occurred about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday on Elizabeth Lake near Voorheis. The victim has been identified as John Edward Henke, 65, of Waterford. He is believed to have lived nearby, police said.

“Shortly after the accident, a vehicle was found burning behind a Sam’s Club on Summit Place Drive,” Lt. Scott Good said. “It is believed it was deliberately set on fire and that led police to the suspect who was taken into custody.”

The suspect, a 36- year-old Pontiac man described as an acquaintance of the owner of the 2003 red Honda minivan, had borrowed the vehicle, police said.

Investigators want to talk to witnesses to the accident, believed to have occurred when Henke was trying to cross Elizabeth Lake and was struck by the westbound vehicle.

Anyone with information about the driver or vehicle involved in the accident is asked to call police at (248) 618-6064.
