East Lansing – Michigan State senior defensive back Demetrious Cox pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor assault and battery charge on Friday, according to 54B District Court records.

The Spartans captain this season will be back in court on Jan. 5 for a pretrial hearing.

Court records say Cox was arrested at 3 a.m. Nov. 24 in East Lansing, just days before Michigan State’s final game of the season at Penn State. The Jeannette, Pa., native did not make the trip with the team for what coach Mark Dantonio said was a violation of team rules.

Cox told the Lansing State Journal at the time that he was “falsely accused.” He could face up to 93 days in jail if convicted.
