SPORTSLions potential free-agent targetsCB A.J. Bouye – Undrafted out of Central Florida in 2013, Bouye burst onto the scene in 2016. Inside or outside, few were as sticky in coverage. He gave up completions on fewer than 50 percent of the throws his direction with 16 pass breakups.Eric Christian Smith, Associated PressDT Abry Jones – A young ascending defensive tackle who handles the run well. He made the most of an opportunity to start the second half of last season and is primed for a big payday after a few years of rotational work.Gary McCullough, Associated PressDE Jabaal Sheard – It’s always worth looking at the New England connection and GM Bob Quinn was there when the Pats signed Sheard, a well-rounded edge defender who won’t break the bank.Elise Amendola, Associated PressLB Zach Brown – A former second-round pick, Brown gets a second crack at free agency after generating limited interest last year. He thrived in Buffalo, racking up nearly 150 tackles (11 for a loss). He also offers plus range in coverage.Adrian Kraus, Associated PressDE Mario Addison – There’s some similarities between Addison and Kerry Hyder. Addison is a better pass rusher than run defender, but he’s made strides in the latter. He’ll be 30 in December, but there’s not a lot of mileage on the legs.Bob Leverone, Associated PressLB Spencer Paysinger – Certainly not a sexy name on the market, but Paysinger has consistently been a quality four-phase special teamer, something you can never have enough of on the roster. As a defensive player, he’s decent in coverage.Mark J. Terrill, Associated PressRB LeGarrette Blount – Hey, look, another Patriot. A human battering ram, the 250-pounder is coming off his second 1,000-yard season and his 18 rushing TDs led the NFL. Off-field history and age (30) should keep price tag down.Steven Senne, Associated PressTE Jack Doyle – A good run blocker, Doyle also offers plenty as a pass catcher, hauling in 59 passes last season. That versatility would allow the Lions to more effectively operate out of two-tight end sets, without tipping play preference.Michael Conroy, Associated PressCB Logan Ryan – Another former Patriot, Ryan’s career has been up and down, but he has above-average ball skills with 13 interceptions and 41 passes defended in four seasons. He can play inside or outside, giving the Lions options with Nevin Lawson.Joe Mahoney, Associated PressWR Ted Ginn – Ginn has flaws, no question. Namely, he drops too many passes. But he has rare speed to stretch a defense, something the Lions lack. He could also handle both punt and kickoff returns for the team.Phelan Ebenhack, Associated Press
