UM TE Asiasi will transfer; Harbaugh 'optimistic' Newsome will return

Ann Arbor — Michigan tight end Devin Asiasi is transferring, coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed Tuesday night.

Harbaugh was asked if he was surprised by the decision and if family reasons at home in California led to the decision.

“Yeah, he’s moving on. Transferring. He leaves in great status,” Harbaugh said after he and wife, Sarah, were judges for Mock Rock. “He was doing great in school. He was doing great in football. Really popular and well-liked by his teammates. We wish him well.”

Asiasi was a backup tight end as a freshman last season and was expected to be in the mix for significant playing time this fall. Michigan returns Ian Bunting and Tyrone Wheatley Jr. as its experienced tight ends.

Newsome making progress

It is unclear when Michigan sophomore left tackle Grant Newsome, who suffered a season-ending leg injury during the Wisconsin game last fall, might be able to play again, but Harbaugh is certain that will happen.

Newsome spent 38 days in the hospital after the injury.

“He’s working out every day,” Harbaugh said. “He’s getting around good. He’s making strides. He’s tough as a $2 steak and doing it with an incredible attitude. Do not count him out.”

Harbaugh said he’s “optimistic” Newsome will return to the field.

“He’ll play,” Harbaugh said, adding he’s not certain when but at some point Newsome will return.
