Live Tigers blog: Tigers lose 3rd in a row, 7-3 to White Sox
The Tigers have lost three in a row after falling 7-3 to the White Sox on Friday.
After going up 2-0 in the bottom of the first on former Tiger Mike Pelfrey, the Tigers lost the lead on back-to-back solo home runs from Todd Frazier and Avisail Garcia in the top of the second.
The Tigers (11-11) never led again.
The White Sox (12-9) went up 3-2 in the top of the third, but the Tigers tied it up in the fifth. Then, the White Sox scored two in the eighth before getting two more in the ninth on a home run from Tim Anderson off of Joe Jimenez to seal the win.
Game two of the three-game weekend series is set for 7:10 tomorrow. Right-hander Michael Fulmer (2-1, 3.79 ERA) will get the ball for the Tigers, while lefty Derek Holland (2-1, 1.62 ERA) will go for the White Sox.
Jimenez gives up homer in 9th
Friday's won't go down as one of Joe Jimenez's finest outings.
He got the ball for the top of the ninth inning and allowed two runs.
After Tyler Saladino singled to lead off the inning, the next batter Tim Anderson sent a 2-0 pitch a few rows in front of the scoreboard in left field to make it 7-3.
Jimenez got out of the inning without further damage, striking out Todd Frazier and Matt Davidson -- with a Avisail Garcia single in between.
Tigers go 1-2-3 in 8th
The Tigers are running out of innings.
White Sox fireballer Nate Jones set the Tigers down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the eighth.
Justin Upton struck out swinging, before Alex Avila grounded out to second base. Then, Jim Adduci struck out swinging to end the inning.
After eight, the Tigers are down 5-3.
White Sox get 2 in 8th
The White Sox loaded the bases twice against Alex Wilson in the top of the eighth inning.
They scored when it counted.
A pair of errors from Nicholas Castellanos after a Melky Cabrera leadoff single loaded the bases with nobody out, but Matt Davidson grounded into a 6-2-3 double play to tie off the bleeding.
However, Wilson intentionally walked Yomer Sanchez to reload them, before Geovany Soto smacked a two-run single to give the White Sox the lead.
Going to the bottom of the eighth, the White Sox have a 5-3 lead.
Tigers go in order in 7th
Right-hander Anthony Swarzak set the Tigers down in order in his first full inning of work, after replacing lefty Dan Jennings with one out in the sixth.
The Tigers and White Sox are tied at 3 after seven innings.
Melky Cabrera, Todd Frazier and Avisail Garcia are due up to face Tigers right-hander Alex Wilson, who is replacing Matthew Boyd, in the eighth.
7th-Inning Stretch: Tigers 3, White Sox 3
Matthew Boyd has pitched a fine game, despite the back-to-back home runs he allowed to start the third inning.
Boyd likely finished his night with a 1-2-3 seventh inning, on his 97th pitch.
Alex Wilson was warming up in the bullpen, and could be called on to pitch the eighth in a 3-3 game.
Adduci stranded at 3rd to end 6th
Jim Adduci was, essentially, the only offense for the Tigers in the bottom of the sixth inning.
He singled to lead off the sixth, before stealing second on a John Hicks strikeout. Jose Iglesias moved him to third on a fielder's choice, where Adduci was stranded to end the inning.
After six, it's still 3-3.
Boyd tosses scoreless 6th
Matthew Boyd allowed one baserunner in the top of the sixth inning -- Yolmer Sanchez, who reached with one out on a fielding error by Nicholas Castellanos at third base. Two batters later, with two outs, Sanchez was picked off to end the inning.
Going to the bottom of the sixth, it's still 3-3.
Tigers tie game in 5th
The Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.
After Mike Pelfrey walked Ian Kinsler to lead off the half inning, before giving up a single to Nicholas Castellanos two batters later, Victor Martinez singled in Kinsler to tie the game at 3 with one out.
Pelfrey was lifted for left-hander Dan Jennings, who got the final two outs -- leaving two runners stranded.
After five, it's a 3-3 game.
Boyd works second straight 1-2-3 frame
Matthew Boyd is settling down.
He threw a 1-2-3 top of the fifth for his second straight perfect inning.
Boyd has thrown 79 pitches through five, so his pitch count is still well within limits.
Going to the bottom of the fifth, the White Sox are up 3-2.
Tigers strand leadoff walk in 4th
The Tigers got a leadoff walk from Alex Avila in the bottom of the fourth inning, but that was the only offense Mike Pelfrey allowed.
Jim Adduci struck out looking before John Hicks flew out and Jose Iglesias grounded out to end the inning.
After four, it's still 3-2.
Boyd tosses perfect 4th
Matthew Boyd threw a perfect top of the fourth inning for the Tigers. He got Leury Garcia to ground out and Tyler Saladino to fly out to center field, before striking out Tim Anderson looking to end the half inning.
Going to the bottom of the fourth, the White Sox still have a 3-2 lead.
Tigers go in order in 3rd
The Tigers went down in order in the bottom of the third inning.
Nicholas Castellanos flew out to right field, before Victor Martinez grounded out softly to first base and Justin Upton struck out looking.
After three, the Tigers are down 3-2.
White Sox take lead in 3rd
The White Sox took the lead in the top of the third inning.
After Tim Anderson led off with a double, which right fielder Jim Adduci misplayed, Melky Cabrera singled him over to third. Two batters later, Avisail Garcia hit an RBI infield single to score Anderson. Matthew Boyd walked Matt Davidson to load the bases, but got out of the inning with just the one run allowed.
Going to the bottom of the third, the White Sox have a 3-2 lead.
Tigers leave one on in 2nd
The Tigers left a runner on base in the bottom of the second inning.
After John Hicks started things off with a single, he was erased on a fielder's choice off the bat of Jose Iglesias.
Iglesias stole second, but was stranded to end the inning.
After two, the Tigers and White Sox are tied at 2.
White Sox tie game quickly
Todd Frazier and former Tiger Avisail Garcia hit back-to-back long home runs to lead off the second inning, tying the game.
Frazier's went to left field near the scoreboard, while Garcia's went to left-center.
Matthew Boyd then struck out Yolmer Sanchez and Geovany Soto for the first two outs. After a single from Leury Garcia, Boyd got Tyler Saladino to fly out to center field to end the half inning.
Tigers get to Pelfrey early
The Tigers got their first hit of the game with one out in the bottom of the first inning. Ready for this?
It was on a Tyler Collins bunt single.
Yup.
After a single from Nicholas Castellanos and a walk to Victor Martinez, the Tigers loaded the bases on former teammate Mike Pelfrey.
Then, they capitalized.
Justin Upton hit a 2-run single to put the Tigers on the board.
Pelfrey walked Alex Avila on four pitches to reload the bases, but Jim Adduci grounded into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.
After one, the Tigers are up 2-0.
Boyd tosses scoreless 1st
Matthew Boyd threw a scoreless first inning for the Tigers.
On the second pitch of the game, Tyler Saladino doubled to the right-center field gap, putting a runner in scoring position early. But the Tigers escaped trouble after Boyd struck out Tim Anderson swinging at a ball in the dirt. Alex Avila then threw Saladino out trying to steal third base, before Melky Cabrera grounded out to second base to end the half inning.

Tonight's game between the Tigers and White Sox is a reunion of sorts.
Ex-Tiger Mike Pelfrey returns to the Motor City and will be on the mound for the White Sox (11-9) in his second start of the season.
His first start was -- as it was in a Tigers uniform -- a tad forgettable. Pelfrey on Saturday went 4 1/3 innings against the Indians, giving up four runs -- two earned -- and was saddled with the loss when the South Siders were blanked, 7-0.
For the Tigers (11-10), left-hander Matthew Boyd will get the start. He won two of his first three decisions of the season, before a short start of his own in Detroit's 5-4 win over the Twins on Saturday. Boyd's only loss of the season was in the regular season opener -- an 11-2 shellacking at the hands of the White Sox in Chicago.
Jim Adduci is in the lineup for the Tigers, batting seventh and playing right field. He and Tyler Collins -- who is hitting in the 2-hole and playing center field -- collided in the top of the sixth inning of yesterday afternoon's 2-1 loss to the Mariners. Adduci appeared shaken up on the play and was lifted defensively for Mikie Mahtook in the top of the ninth after his calf tightened up.
As for Collins, he was the lone bright spot for the Tigers offensively, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and a walk
“We scored one run,” Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said in frustration after yesterday's loss. “You're not going to win many baseball games when you score one run. Iwakuma is a smart pitcher. We got four hits – three of them by one guy.
“Other than Tyler Collins, no one was really able to solve him today."
First pitch is set for 7:10.
