Cowboys confident in UM’s Lewis, despite legal issues

The Detroit News,

Former Michigan cornerback Jourdan Lewis’ legal issues apparently have not set off any alarms with the Dallas Cowboys, who drafted him in last month’s NFL Draft.

Lewis was charged with one misdemeanor count of domestic violence stemming from an alleged incident with his then-girlfriend on March 15. He pleaded not guilty and is scheduled for a jury trial in July.

As The Detroit News reported in March, the police report from the March incident also referenced that on May 5, 2015, police had been called to the couple’s residence for a “domestic incident.” The Cowboys reportedly have looked into both incidents.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told the Dallas Morning News the team “thoroughly looked at his situation” before drafting Lewis in the third round.

“We feel real good about the pick,” Jones told the Morning News. “Outstanding off-the-field character throughout his life, great strength of character. We were satisfied we would be OK there.”

Lewis told reporters after he was drafted that he is believes “all charges will be dropped.”

“And I think I will be exonerated from everything,” Lewis told the Morning News. “I’m completely innocent. I believe that wholeheartedly.”
