Police: Distracted driving crash kills woman, child

A 35-year-old Ohio woman and her five-year-old child were killed in Monroe County Friday night in a multi-vehicle traffic crash which police say was caused by a distracted driver.

According to Monroe County Sheriffs, the incident happened on US-23, north of Summerfield Road, in Summerfield Township. Police say the preliminary investigation found a 27-year-old Holt man was distracted while driving his 2007 Dodge Ram pick-up truck southbound on US-23.

“While in motion, Mr. Moyer struck the rear of a 2010 Hyundai Elantra being operated by a 35 year old Ohio woman having a 5 year old rear passenger, also from Ohio,” a sheriff’s press release said. The release did not identify the victims, nor the sex of the child.

“The female Ohio operator was then forced into the rear of a 2004 Toyota Solara as both vehicles came to rest,” the release said.

The pickup truck driver, however, was still in motion then striking the rear of a 2012 Cadillac CTS, the release said.

The woman and child in the Elantra were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

“All other parties involved refused medical treatment and were released. At the time of the traffic crash, all operators and passengers were wearing safety belts. The use of alcohol is not a factor,” police said.

The incident remains under investigation by Monroe County Sheriffs.
