Michigan received a late-night surprise Tuesday when Hamden (Conn.) Hall High three-star tight end Luke Schoonmaker committed to its 2018 recruiting class.

Schoonmaker (6-foot-6, 225 pounds) made the announcement on Twitter, posting a video of him removing a Hamden Hall T-shirt to reveal a Michigan one underneath followed by a personal note thanking his parents, coaches and teammates with his signature in maize and blue.

“The journey has been fun and exciting! I am very grateful to all the amazing coaches of the many amazing programs that recruited me throughout this memorable process,” Schoonmaker tweeted. “I am excited and honored to proudly announce that I have committed to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Michigan as a part of the class of 2022! #TheTeamTheTeamTheTeam #GoWolverines #GoBlue”

Schoonmaker is rated the No. 2 prospect in Connecticut and No. 32 tight end in the nation in the 247Sports Composite rankings. He picked the Wolverines over offers from Indiana, Rutgers, Connecticut and Temple, among others.

Schoonmaker is the 11th commit in Michigan’s 2018 class and first tight end, a position of need for the Wolverines.
